the best idea EVER EVER EVER.

Jun 1, 2011 | Being A Mama, Life in Progress

I know I might be a little late to see this, but this has to be one of the best ideas I’ve ever happened upon, like change-my-life best idea. Really, really good. Although I’m not quite ready to jump into the google chrome browser this ad is ultimately trying to sell, it’s the story in the ad that changes everything for me.

I’ve been using gmail/email accounts for years (love them), but after watching this video, I was inspired to create a special gmail account just for baby True. Now that he has his own email, we’re (me, John, our closest family members, and friends) sending him emails with short little letters, photos (from our iphones!) with short descriptions (first high chair!, first blueberry!). We’re emailing him short video clips (from the iphone!) with short descriptions, and even short voice recordings (of the songs we sing to him – again, recorded on the iphones!). The plan is to document his life in an easy, simple way. When he’s older, he’ll have his own inbox FILLED to the brim with stories and photos and video and letters and voice recordings from those that love him (and us) the most. He’ll see his life unfolding from babyhood to boyhood to manhood. A virtual scrapbook/journal if you will.

This project is totally blowing my mind.

Why? Because I’ve been a tad anxious about how I can best document his everyday life without stressing about creating scrapbooks + beautiful journals. I’ve often admired Ali’s way of documenting the life of her family but each time I attempt, I never finish. Sending letters/photos/videos/voice recordings to his own special email account is our personal perfect solution in addition to the memory boxes we’ll keep of drawings, favorite toys and such. What I love most about this email scrapbook is the story telling aspect – that when he’s older he’ll have actual letters from us to him.

It’s so important for me that True has all the details of our everday joys that we’re experiencing with him. I don’t want to miss a thing. I don’t want him to miss a thing. And I want to remember it all. Thank you gmail, for this awesome idea and inspiration. We are all over it! And thank you, iphones for allowing us to easily and quickly send photos, stories, videos, and voice recording directly from our phones to our baby’s email address (ditto for you, Flickr). Awesome, awesome. It has changed our lives.

Sending much love,
