an unlikely dragonfly

Jan 26, 2008 | Life in Progress

do you see it? it’s a perfectly laid out dragonfly shape embedded into this found rock. so cool. i was at my friend kelly’s house recently and stumbled upon this beauty in her dining room. lucky girl.

i also stumbled upon this quote today and it had me stopping in my tracks for a moment:

“perfection consists not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” – angelique arnauld

yeah, the perfectionism that is starting to seep into my life has got to go. the not being able to wind down and relax at a moments notice has got to go. last nite, i was up until 2am reading the heartbreaking story of one woman, a recent inspiration to me. insightful. a beautiful writer (that left me with word and language envy). her story had me feeling downright silly for being so consumed with myself and my very, very simple complaints. the world is so much larger than me and my little life. i felt that last nite. a push to get over it, already. life is more. more forgiving. more depth. more, extraordinary. i want to feel all of that.

Sending much love,

Perhaps it’s the imperfections that bind us all together. It’s doing the ordinary things that we all do that makes me relate-able to say, you, and vice-versa. But, the extraordinary things that you do inspire me that I can do also extraordinary things in my world. OK–there’s your mush for the night! 🙂

I enjoyed reading your post. I have a frog pond near my home and I love watching the dragonflies in the summer. They are such lovely creatures. I also find your artwork o inspiring. Can’t wait to get the new Cloth, Paper, Scissors to read your next article.

I truly believe that perfectionism is a fantasy — it is an impossible goal to achieve. But doing things well, doing what we can to the best of our ability — that is what matters most to me.

I agree – it’s our imperfections that make life rich. Letting go of perfectionism is a hard thing to do and one that needs repeated practice. I hope you have a relaxing weekend and stay warm and cozy through the rainy days.

I’m catching up on all your posts before Laini comes over shortly to pick me up and whisk me away for a tasty breakfast and I leave your site very inspired! You are unbelivable in what you have created and accomplished. Btw, I think its our imperfections that make us much more loveable and endearing. Its like people with impeccable, wrinkle-free clothes, and 100% crumb-free homes- they freak me out a little and I don’t feel drawn to them. Better to live in the crumpley middle with your dreams, failures, and everything inbetween!
