How I respond to “that’s not a flattering outfit” on you.

Mar 19, 2019 | My Creative Practice, Wear Your Joy™

I’m a fan of loose layers, colors, and wearing my joy. I’m not too worried if what I’m wearing is super “flattering.” I’m more concerned if what I’m wearing is aligned with my joy, with the reflection of who I am now and who I want to be and become in the world.

I’ve been surprised by comments I sometimes receive on social media that generally say something like “nice colors, but not flattering on you.” Hmmmm.

I often think of these comments as Teachers. They are simply here to remind me to stay with my practice of unlearning the rules about what it looks like to show up as a woman in the world.

I want to show up in what feels like ME, whether that’s “flattering” or not – both with how I adorn my body and how I live a messy, beautiful life story, which many would consider not  “flattering.” And yet, here I am, living my joy. And wearing my joy, too.

Here’s to feeling GOOD and joy-filled in how we choose to cloth our boides. And here’s to unlearning all the strange rules about how to dress for other people’s pleasure. Wearing our joy is an inside job.

PS: For those of you interested, the tunics and scarves and flowy pants that I’m wearing all come from Gudrun, my favorite eco-friendly clothing company (they have great sales!). Jeans are old Pilcro high waisted jeans from Anthro. Clogs are Dansko. And boots are Frye.

PPS: For those of you who want to take the Wear Your Joy™ class with me, registration is open!

Big XO!

Sending much love,

I also love Gudrun clothes and almoust all my clothes are Gudrun Sjöden. I think that when you feel good inside it will show also outside. And I love all my over sized dresses! I don’t care does it look flattering or not. And I just love your style, keep it up 🙂

I love your style and I wish everyone would just remember we all march to a different drummer (thank goodness). It is like the women that say to me “you would look much younger if you colored your hair”, I like my age and every grey hair on my head! Keep wearing your joy, Kelly!

It is always good to be reminded of this. I mostly wear what I like . . . and what makes me feel good. I’m 60 years old . . . and there came a time with me where it really didn’t matter if someone didn’t like my style. If it makes me feel good . . . I believe it is flattering to me. Wearing our joy is a way of creating joy in every day!
