Spiral of Lights

Dec 5, 2017 | Being A Mama, Life in Progress

Have you guys heard about the Spiral of Lights tradition? We attended our second Winter Spiral last night at True’s Waldorf school. It’s so moving, so exquisitely beautiful, and something we can all do, even in our backyards. In a completely darkened room, each child walks the spiral (created with evergreens) alone with an unlit candle. When they arrive at the center of the spiral, they light their candle from the center candle (representing light in the darkness) and then retrace their steps back out of the spiral with their Light. While walking out, they choose a place along the spiral to set their Light down on the floor, lighting the way for the children who will walk next.

It’s dark, and the only sounds are from the singing. I will always remember True singing all the songs, proudly and with conviction while watching the other kids walk the spiral.

This ceremony is about recognizing the darkest of seasons. While we humans are bustling about, the natural world is hushed and quiet. Celebrations like this one, remind us to not only carry the Light of summer into Winter but to find quiet celebrations amidst the busyness of the season.

These are the moments. The soul care created and nourished. The ceremony of recognition that we are spiritual beings. That we are a part of something profoundly beautiful. That our lives matter. That the seasons matter. I am in awe of all that I’m learning through Waldorf philosophy. Love their way of bringing meaning into every single thing.

Do you guys have ceremony traditions like this? Please share. I’d love to know!

Sending much love,
