True and the Magic of Kindness

Jul 25, 2017 | Being A Mama, Life in Progress

The other day True had his first experience watching someone have a little bit of road rage. It was a scary incident involving an angry driver following he and John into a parking lot and speaking her frustration to John from her car.

As any child would be, he came home startled, so upset by the entire experience. He was frightened, confused, and so tearful. As a family, we processed the whole event and shared about our feelings. Toward the end of our conversation, I suggested that perhaps we send out some love energy to the woman who was so angry, that we send her good thoughts/prayers/vibes because kindness can work magic on people who are angry. We all agreed, and closed our eyes for a split second and send love her way.

Fast forward 48 hours and True and I are driving into the same parking lot where the incident took place. Here’s what went down…

True: Oh no, what if that lady has followed us again. What will we do?
Me: Hmmm, any ideas? (In my head, I’m thinking I would respectfully but very firmly set a boundary and then get the heck out of there to protect myself and my kid.)
True: I know what we could do! I’ll give her one of the clay hearts I made. Like you said Mom, kindness works magic on angry people.

Seriously you guys, this is GOLD to my heart. That he was able to come up with a solution that was based in kindness vs his fear, well, it just makes me beam. Love this kid so.

It made me wonder how I can be more kind in a million different situations when I’d rather be right. Kindness over being right. Yes, new mantra for me.
