Using Ritual and Ceremony

Aug 8, 2018 | Kelly Rae Moves To Sisters, Life in Progress

Many years ago, before we moved our stuff into this home, John and I sat on the bedroom floor, sipped wine, lit candles, and talked about what we wanted to invite into this home. It was an important Opening to a new season of life and memories.

And now we’re on the other side of this season. Last night, we had an important Closing Ceremony with True. We went around the house, room by room, lighting a candle for each room. In the center of the candles, we each had a stone to help hold the energy and love (True picked out his and Papa’s stones at the gem store – he’s super into crystals and rocks). After lighting the candle, we circled up and recalled our favorite memories from that room, gave thanks for its purpose, and said goodbye.

There were tears, resistance, laughter, and tons of permissions for each of us to feel our feelings. Life is messy. Tender. Real. I’m grateful that we are weathering its seasons, good and hard, in meaningful ways together.

Change is hard, friends. I’ve learned to use ritual and ceremony as a way to tend to both my individual and collective family soul. I do it for the macro (moves, birthdays, holidays, new school years, etc) as well as the everyday micro (prayers, blessings, gratitude lists, photography, etc). It’s comforting, memorable, and connects my heart to what really matters.

I can already feel our hearts expanding over here, our connection to one another deepening. This is it, ya’ll. Life in progress. Life happening.

How do you say goodbye? Do you have practices/rituals/ceremonies?

Sending much love,
