It’s DAY 2 of the 7 day #WEARYOURJOY challenge! Loving the images over on the #wearyourjoy feed.
Today I want to talk about the power of DELIGHT when it comes to wearing our joy.
When I’m creating a collage painting in my studio, one of the ways that I get out of my own way and avoid getting stuck in indecision is by choosing collage papers that simply delight my soul. This practice immediately engages my senses while also lifting my spirit toward joy. I don’t worry about whether or not the papers “go together”. I start by choosing what delights me. It’s that simple.
The same is absolutely true when it comes to this Wear Your Joy practice.
As you move along in your practice, it’s important to make choices that that delight your soul. Joseph Campbell once said, “Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.” With my whole heart, I believe this to be true – not just about your life overall, but also in the tiniest details, like the clothes we choose to put on our bodies.
In the world of Delight, there are no rules.
There are no rules when it comes to choosing wardrobe colors. The best color choices are the ones that delight your soul. There are no rules about patterns and whether or our body type ‘should or should not’ wear them. Choose patterns (or no patterns) that delight your soul.
Following your bliss in this way will lead to outfits that reflect your own sacred style. You’ll look at yourself in the mirror and think (or scream) “This is me! The REAL me!”.
You might find that choosing what delights you comes easily because you’re already tuned into what you actually crave, desire, and like. Or, this might not be so easy. And that’s okay.
Why Choosing Our Delight Changes Everything
Following your bliss is really about following the trail of whispers toward what is calling you; what nurtures your soul.
It’s about allowing yourself to be inspired and connect with the deep place inside you that knows your true essence; your voice. From the seemingly simple decisions, like picking out clothes, to bigger decisions like who to marry, what job to accept, and on and on. Knowing what delights you, and then following those brave choices toward your callings, urges, and whispers is how we begin to deeply trust our own voices, our own brilliance.
Choosing what delights you not only becomes your map home to the creative magnificence that lives inside you (helping you create and define your unique style in ALL THINGS), but it also helps you create a life that is deeply your own, one that belongs to you, and honors and nurtures the calls of your heart. Following your bliss leads you home.
So, then how do we begin to know what delights us?
Since starting my own Wear Your Joy practice in 2011, I have only chosen clothes that delight me. It’s also why I don’t purchase a single thing (clothing, home decor, etc) unless I’m 100% in love with it. Because, of course, it’s so much deeper than simply getting dressed up in joy each day or buying something for my home. It’s about remembering who I am, what makes me happy, and consciously honoring that spirit.
It’s so easy to lose ourselves to the routines and business of our everyday lives. Fiercely holding onto who we are becomes critical to holding onto our voices, and trusting our choices ahead. Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing what delights you!
Having trouble knowing what delights you? These questions might help get your wheels turning.
- What in your current wardrobe delights you? Write down in your journal why you love it. Shape? Color? Pattern? How does it make you feel? Sexy? Artsy? Sophisticated?
- When it comes to colors (in general, not just colors of clothes), what makes your spirit sing? Muted, earthy tones? Bright colors? Black and/or white?
- As a young kid (6 or 7, maybe), what clothing items made you squeal with delight? Rain boots? Sparkles? Ruffles? Invite your inner child, that part of yourself that is brilliant at accessing deep joy, to lead the way.
Your #wearyourjoy Challenge
1. Selfie Self Love
Each morning after you’ve put on your joyful outfit, I want you to take a Self-Love Selfie. Not only will this be a powerful practice of embracing where and who you are today with love and kindness, but it’s also a way to witness your visual transformation, one day at a time, as you continue to choose joy.
Important: When you take your Self-Love Selfie, I want you to look at yourself with utmost compassion and joy and quietly say to yourself these words by author Amy B “You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.
2. Conscious Clothing Choices
Each evening, before you go to bed, take some time to consciously choose your outfit for the following day. Include your whole outfit, including accessories, socks, and shoes. Make sure it’s an outfit that gives you joy. Don’t worry about doing it “right” – just choose your delight.
Important: Take your outfit out of the closet and put it in a place of honor. Perhaps you hang it on your bathroom door (or bedroom wall) where it can stand out in all of it’s sweet little joy-filled glory. Perhaps it’s carefully draped over a chair where you’ll see it first thing in the morning and get a little joy spark. Either way, put your outfit somewhere uncluttered, in a place of honor.

Hi, I’m Kelly Rae Roberts! Before I picked up my first paintbrush at the age of 30, I was a medical social worker. I followed my whispers and started playing with paint, and everything changed.
