time with my publishing company

Sep 12, 2007 | Entrepreneurship, Life in Progress

(it’s nice to see some changing colors here in ohio)
(marissa (awesome book designer) , jessica (wonderful editor), me, and cutie pie katie (editor over at memory makers)

observations, so far:

my new editor, jessica, kicks ass. she is smart and professional and sassy all at once. i still love tonia, my first editor, the one who asked me to do this. i feel incredibly lucky to work with both of these talented women. they have vision!

i can’t seem to say Thank You enough. thank you for lunch. thank you for your patience. thank you for the tea. thank you for your ideas. thank you for this opportunity. thank you for your casual friendliness and for not minding that i’m either wearing my yellow shoes or my flip-flops. thank you, thank you!

the photographer, christine, also kicks ass. she’s with us all day, taking photos of all the technique step-outs and could not be more easy going – really takes the pressure off.

i am so enthralled by the entire process of publishing that a part of me wants to be an intern at north light books. these are actual dream makers, these people. they are using their expertise and talents to not only birth dreams for artists by asking them to write books, but are creating wonderful, smart, beautifully designed books. love it.

speaking of designs, i met marissa, book designer extraordinaire. i have been hoping and wishing all along that this talented woman would be working on the book, so you can imagine my sheer delight when i learned she had taken the project. i’m in love with all of the books she’s done. she’s amazing. omg!

i’m having more fun than i thought. everything is easier than i thought it would be. smoother. calmer. i’m really loving how the paintings are turning out and how accessible the techniques feel. i’m also loving all the lunches with the folks who are all working on this project (this is what i mean about feeling a part of a collective team effort. the book doesn’t feel like “mine”. it feels like “ours”. in fact, i have a hard time right now saying “my book”. it’s “the book” most of the time – feels better that way). anyway, it’s quite informative and a nice touch to lunch with the designer, the marketers, the editors, etc…..feels collaborative.

i’m very chatty this week which means i’m cozy and comfortable.

i am going to bed each night (around 1am) with this thought: “i have no idea how i found myself here, but i am feeling every second of this experience with honor and gratitude.”

my hands and fingernails are all messy and full of paint in the photos and this doesn’t bother me in the least. in fact, it makes me happy.

one last thing for now: look what i found when i went digging into the depths of my paper pile…my dear man secretly went through my stash a couple of weeks ago to make a one-of-a-kind heart shaped card for me. today, i found the cut-out, an extension of the original thought. totally unexpected, and very cool.

Sending much love,

you have all the same girls in your corner as I do!
what a great team they all are! lots of tea, crazy business lunches and staying up to 1-am every night… I remember this all to well! it is a strange felling, almost as if you need to pinch your self but your just a tad bit over worked to pull it off 🙂
you have done a great job describing the feeling of it all. Are you all done with the book? we still have a few more weeks of writing to go.

Congratulations on a job well done!

As a collector of heart shaped things, I adore the finding of the paper with the cut-out. A gift that give twice…….and now once again.
