My old friend Maria Stroup is teaming up with Habitat For Humanity for Katrina relief in December and in March and has invited me to go with her, along with a group of teenagers she’s taking. Both trips will involve about a week of rebuilding homes for Katrina victims. I can’t wait to go and actually DO something. Besides, it will be like old times with Maria. When I was 16 she took a group of us to Americus, Georgia for a HFH trip. One of the most powerful memories I have from the trip was meeting the family we were building the home for. Here we were, a bunch of teenagers learning what it meant to serve those less fortunate than ourselves, but the bigger lesson learned was that we are all in this together, all of us. The family was perhaps a little less fortunate than us in terms of economic wealth, but she (the mom) had an enormous heart of love and kindness and gratitude. She surprised us one nite by showing up at the place we were staying with a big, delicious meal she had prepared for us – for us! and we were there to help her! It was a great lesson of life. How humbling that must have been for her to accept the help of HFH to build her a home, and then to show up with a home cooked meal for us. It was her ‘thank you’ to us and it was powerful. I will never forget her or the entire experience. It was a defining moment for me.
