My Life has Never Been The Same

“Art For Non-Artists.” That’s what the class was called. It was being offered at a local community center, and I signed up with my friend Lisa who wanted to take the class with a friend. I was 25 years old, years away from discovering my creative callings, and certainly NOWHERE near identifying as an artist. I was a full-time Medical Social Worker at the time, but there was a TINY, barely noticeable whisper, to do something creative.

I was struggling with depression during this time in my life. Like so many 20-somethings, I was finding my way in the world. I had recently moved 3000 miles from home (FL) to Portland, OR. I had a hard time making new friends (this was before social media) and was struggling with Becoming. Who was I? Where was I going? Who are my people?

Anyway, each week Lisa and I would show up to the Art For Non-Artists class. I don’t remember much of the art projects, but I do remember feeling really good about being with my friend and just making stuff.

John must have seen me light up a bit because I came home one day to find that he had carved out a little tiny art nook in our tiny home for me.

That is love, ya’ll. I don’t remember actually ever using the tiny art nook (the time just wasn’t ripe yet for me), but all of these years later I am reminded that often it is others who often see – well before we do – what possibilities live inside of us.

Many moons later, I know this to be true: If you don’t consider yourself an artist, but you feel drawn to other people’s art, please take notice. I believe that everything we find “beautiful” is actually a quiet whisper, calling us toward the life that is waiting for us.

I hung out on the “non-artist” realm until I finally started playing with paint, at age 30. That was when everything changed and opened up for me. My life has literally never been the same.

That same creative expansion and opening is possible for you. Hello Soul, Hello Mixed-Media Mantras is an online painting course for people who love soul work as much as art work. When you’re ready to answer the call, I’d be honored to guide you into a fun, soulful, no-mistakes way of painting. No experience needed.

Your soul has a mantra. Let’s paint it together.

Sending much love,

Hi I just moved to Bend Oregon and retired from my creative life as a funky coffeehouse proprietor on the East Coast. I miss it, I miss the people, the creativity, the love and loss of friends. I’m looking forward to making some new ones now. Do you do any local art classes? Obviously, I would prefer going to your classes, but maybe if those aren’t available you could also let me know of others in the area that you know are great. It’s time for me to find my new tribe 🙂 thank you so much!

      Hi Yvonne,
Welcome to Bend! I live in Sisters, so I’m still learning about Bend so I’m not sure about classes, but I’m sending lots of wishes for you as you find your new creative tribe!

I find just looking at your site, photos, art, studio is calming & pleasant. I like your attitude about creating & it feels good to me. I’ve been an artist for some 30 years but got sidetracked by life…taking care of others, making money from working “real jobs” (tongue in cheek), & a lot of somewhat fear of doing what I love-ART. I painted silk, (abstracted architectural images, bright colors), sold some, then came to a halt. I’ve been trying, researching artists sites to build my own plus blog. I do promote other artists on FB, of which I love to do, having teacher guts…keeps that part of art in my daily life. I’m hoping to move back in the art life soon. You are an inspiration. Thank you.

Dearest Shirley, thank you so much for your kindness and vulnerability. You are an artist, whether you are “making art” or not. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

I was given this class for my birthday. No art experience other than being an admirer. The no mistakes, easy style of teaching pulled me right in immediately. Pure fun! I found a whole new passion! Thank you Kelly Rae!!

This class is my favorite Kelly Rae class. For the first time I produced not one but two pieces I wanted to display in my home. I love them more as the months go by and they draw people to them and have started many beautiful conversations as we talk about the symbolism and meaning. I’m grateful to Kelly Rae for offering this class and for the way she walks us through it with such grace and encouragement.
    This is well worth taking.
