Yesterday, I stood in line at the coffee shop, waiting for my usual oat milk mocha fix (who else has a solid mocha habit?). Ahead of me, a family was placing a big order, taking their time. The father glanced back at me and said, “What would you like to drink? It’s on us!”
I blinked, caught off guard. “Really?” I asked, hesitant but touched.
“Sure thing,” he said, smiling.
We exchanged a few words, a little small talk, and then I watched as he and his kids gathered their drinks and made their way out, my heart swelling with warmth.
THIS. THIS. THIS.

I was instantly reminded of a time, a few years back, when I made a little habit of paying for the car behind me in the drive-thru, inspired by others doing the same. Or when True and I would wander downtown, hand-delivering $20 tips to the street musicians playing their hearts out. Their gratitude was always so genuine, and they’d offer True—then a budding young musician—words of encouragement, little sparks of inspiration that lit him up. I remember the quiet rush of joy in those moments, the small but mighty feeling of radical, random kindness.

True, now 14, went to a preschool built on the belief that “nothing without joy.” I have always loved that mantra, and I think about it often—especially as a parent. How can I bring more joy into the everyday ordinariness of life? How can love and kindness weave their way into something as simple as a drive-thru line or a walk downtown? The stranger in the coffee shop sparked that inquiry in me again, and it felt like a gentle nudge back to what matters most.

As we step deeper into 2025, I want to hold close these truths:
Nothing without intention.
Nothing without compassionate energy.
Nothing without joy.
And ultimately, nothing without love.
Here’s to carrying that energy forward. I’m beaming love out to each of you. Thank you for being a part of my life in progress. 💛✨
