Standing Tall in Truth, a studio move, and more.

Jan 30, 2017 | My Creative Practice

(New Art! Stand Tell in Your Truth)

This new painting has a lot of meaning for me. Standing tall in my truth means speaking up. Rising up. Standing up. There is so much happening in our world right now, including so much uncertainty here in the US. Like so many of us, I’m feeling the call to activate parts of myself that have been complacent for far too long.

Standing tall in my truth also – for me – means taking a thoughtful look at my life and continuing the controlled burn of the landscape of my life. My truth always seems to circle back to this knowing: I want a simple life.

And so. I’ve made some big moves lately to honor that truth and knowing. And one of those moves was to let my beloved studio go.

I spent last week moving out of the space. With each box packed, a prayer of gratitude was said. This studio, like all the others, served me well. It ushered me into so much goodness, creativity, collaboration, and in the end, clarity.

When the space was fully cleared, I took a peek through the closed and locked door one last time. Deep breath. And then I glanced at my phone and saw 11:11 staring back a me. Yes, a sign, and I’ll take it. For all the knowing in my bones that this was the right move, it still felt wonderful to get the divine message that I was on the right track.

After about 4 years of having my studio outside of my home (hello, small child at home!), I am finally back home.  Here’s a peek into the new space. I’ll share a full tour soon, but if you’re interested in the patchwork wallpaper wall, I’ve got a tutorial of it over here.

After many years (ten!) of moving apartments, homes, cities, and studios, I’m SO HAPPY to have landed here in this spare bedroom of my home. My heart could not be more thrilled to have made a move toward that life of simplicity that is calling me. I am home.

PS: For those asking, Nichole is still with me as my community care and engagement manager! She’s working from a coworking space and absolutely loving it. 🙂

Wanna be weekly art buddies? Come check out my weekly video program called Kelly Rae Unscripted. Every week, you’ll get a new video (totally unscripted!) showing you how I create. In my private studio, at my table, I’ll talk you through each move and mark I make. It will be awesome. And spontaneous. And 100% real.

Big love,

Sending much love,

    Kelly Rae,
I took a few moments to locate this blog post about your move. I confess that I don’t always read your posts and I hadn’t heard anything on the weekly Artist unscripted events. So I guess what has happened is that I know many things about your family and your everyday life from listening to podcasts, taking your angel course, and now the weekly unscripted, and I had to search out the why of your move from your amazing studio. So I enjoyed a few moments getting updated on the move. It makes sense. Did you have a little studio at home so you could paint there? I have my art stuff in the basement, so sometimes I don’t want to go into the gloomy basement to paint, so I need to clean up my mess and have some supplies handy so that I can be mobile and work outside or next to a sunny window (when we have sun.)
I think I will start today. Thanks for the boost.

I am so proud of your courage to go forward in your life to make it what you want. I too have recently moved (to Texas from Florida) and have a new studio in my spare room. I love being able to walk into it when ever I please and walk out and later back in again…I enjoy being spontaneous about what and when I want to do art and a HOME STUDIO is the best! I feel a LOTTA good vibes and totally happy when I walk in that room! I LOVE MY STUDIO!!! Hope you will feel the same about your new arty diggs!

  6. Anne

So very inspired by your courage always, Kelly Rae. I can’t wait for more “reveal”! Blessings as you continue your totally blessed art journey in your new studio space! Love that wall!!

    Kelly Rae
I just want to tell you how much I love you. YOU MADE ME ART! I first saw your work in a scrapbook store in OK. I totally fell in love with your art and bought several pieces. I also bought my first set of art supplies. There I was…50 and having treatment for breast cancer and I saw your work and it felt so healing! Continue to do what you do, where ever it is,(loving the patchwork wall😊), knowing you are doing what you were called to do!
    I remain,
    Still Blessed with One Less!

Congrats on this beautiful move! I love having my studio at home (and painting in my PJs day or night!) Wishing you lots of joy, renewed inspiration and the simplicity your heart desires ♥︎

  9. Jules Phariss

Oh yeah, I hear those pretty red shoes a clicking…there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home. 🌈 😍

Just wondering if you participated in the Women’s March? And can you make a picture with Resist on it? Thanks so much!

  11. Andrea Martinez

    Kelly Rae,
There’s a quote from Brené Brown that I want to share with you..
“I’m convinced that owning our story and loving ourselves through the process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do”… and I think you just did that by enjoying and sharing with us this “change” you’re making to have a simple life.
Thank you for always inspiring us with everything you do. I loved that with each box you packed, a prayer of gratitude was said! I’ll take that as an advice for things I need to let go.

  12. Andrea Olson of Go Diaper Free

Congrats, Kelly! I just did the same thing…it was hard but right. Best wishes on this homecoming of yours! xo Andrea

  13. Marge Setzer

Good for you! A change can be exciting and even lead to bigger and better accomplishments.
My “studio/den/office” is also a spare bedroom and simplification would be a good thing. Where do you fit it all in? I’ll be looking at your progress closely and hope that some of your ingenuity rubs off on me. Personally, I like country, but I’m open to other opportunities. Can’t wait to see what you do. Carry on……

  14. Tracee

I’ve learned it’s not the “space” that inspires creativity, it’s my soul.

    • Anne

      I love this!!

  15. Faith Gaspar

Kelly Rae!!! I am so excited for you to be home!!! Raising our little ones is the Best Art and Life we can choose… and you don’t need to leave the warmth of your home to go to the studio in all the snow and rain Portland gets….. YAY!!!! Enjoy!!!

  16. Stephanie

We always know best where we will create the most magic.
    Congratulations on moving back home.
(My studio is in my home…and I adore it.)

  17. Elaine

    Kelly Rae,
Only you know what is right for you in this moment of time. Your studio at home looks like a beautiful nest just waiting for you. Go get your creativity on!

  18. Michelle

All of your art spaces are joyously beautiful and your new home space appears to follow in that trend! So happy for you! Change is AWESOME!

  19. Kathy

There is no place like home. I totally get your need to be there, next to your family, standing, working, in the middle of home. I love my home studio and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Welcome home!

  20. Grace

How wonderful, Kelly Rae. I am all about simplicity. Thank you once more for being the generous, creative soul that you are. xx

  21. Jules

Hey Kelly-Rae, I am a totally nosey and want to ask where on earth have you put all your stuff? I love that you are home again and I also loved your studio, the light in your home is amazing. Jules xx

  22. sharon stanley

wow, what an exciting change. trust your gut always…it will never lead you in the wrong direction. congrats on being brave with change!

  23. Diana Keith

So happy for you Kelly! My word for this year is SIMPLE…so I get where you’re coming from. I made the choice to “temporarily” leave a career in organizational psychology in favor of spending time with my two home-schooled seven year old boys (my husband teaches them), traveling with my family, AND embarking on my dream of writing stories. That was two years ago…I’ve tried to leave the house to write at the library, but it always feels better if I am surrounded by craziness and giggles…CHEERS to you and your awesome decision!

  24. Jeanne Sternenberg

I love having my studio in my home! Good luck no keep on painting

  25. Heather

This resonates with me so much. I’m about to make some big changes of my own, and I dream of my little art studio at home being my only office. What a beautiful choice and a beautiful space. I’ve loved seeing your evolution through the years. Congrats on the new space!

  26. Chris

Kelly Rae. I love love love all your studios and the joy and colour that radiate from them. But what really strikes me is the bravery to continually move forward and change. I get stuck in one place and feel like someone will say what’s wrong with what you have got, you don’t need anything else. So I will take a pinch of this bravery and try to change something 🙂

    • Kelly Rae Roberts

I really appreciate this, Chris! Thank you so so much! Here’s to being brave!

  27. Barbara

You mentioned you had a calling to simplify your life….so this is a brilliant move.
Your new space is beautiful. Good for you Kelly Rae

  28. Hannah-Rose

Big moves! Your studio was amazing but it will be nice to be home now that your little is in school full time. Maybe the universe is working on something more magical in the future! Like a studio space adjacent to your home! A home with a garage turned to art studio and living space above for guests! Who knows, but you will call in what is best for u!❤️️

  29. Zoe Witcomb

Sweetest art sister, this is the happiest news! Working from home is the best thing in the world. Whenever you get your creative urge, your studio is right there….day or night, you can be in your pj’s or you can dress up….no travel, no extra rent, all of your favourite play things at home with you where they belong. I love having my studio at home, I would be lost without it close. Even just to walk in and smile, or to look at art supplies and get inspired…I could not be more excited for you. Your wallpaper wall and space is devine, you go girl! Stand tall and brave in your truth and keep being the soul leader that you are. Love ya!

  30. Tamara Scott

Oooohhhhh! I have to admit that this makes me a little sad!! I LOVED seeing that studio space. I totally get it though! You are so blessed to be able to work from home. Your new space is lovely. Can’t wait to see it on unscripted.

  31. Ann Marie

Oh! I can’t wait to see the first weekly show filmed in your new space! Although I have to admit, I dreamed of that studio …..

    • Ann Marie Merlino

And I am NOT kidding … I’m reading this blog at …. 11:11!!!!!
